Christmas in Iceland

I went back home to Iceland this Christmas holiday and managed to capture some beautiful shots, which I want to share with you...

Christmas Day was literally spent climbing a mountain. Well, not exactly a mountain, it's technically a very large 'hill' and I didn't get right to the top but it was pretty damn epic nevertheless. The temperature throughout the majority of the climb was a crazy -10°C (14 °F) and got even colder at the top! I honestly thought I had frostbite on my little toe by the end (I didn't obviously!) but it was all so worth it because the view my family and I got from the top was stunning. The snow had covered Reykjavík the night before and the sun was yet to completely rise. On top of that, the walk up to the 'top' was one surrounded by Christmas trees, totally making up for the fact that we didn't have a tree this holiday! The walk up probably took us around 20-30 mins, including the stops to take photos ;) However, the walk (more like run) back down took us like 10 minutes LOL! I think we encountered a total of two people doing the same walk (by themselves!) so we pretty much had the whole area to ourselves.

I had been so stressed out the whole holiday due to uni work, and more, but this was one of those few times I truly felt at peace. As much as I love being in the warm, practically everywhere, there's something about a long walk in the freezing cold with such rewarding views. Honestly priceless.

The other parts of the trip were spent visiting family, going to cafes, and eating (a lot). One of my favourite things to do when I'm back home is to go for random drives. Icelanders do this a lot (at least the ones I know!) and I assume it's because of the ease of driving (compared to London and it's traffic at least) and mostly the views! We then, even in the snowy winter, go get an ice cream. Don't ask why. It's just tradition by now haha!

I'm thinking of doing a 'things to do in Iceland' blog post, what do you think? I'll try get it done after exams ;)

I also spent my New Years in Iceland, which is always fun because every single household goes firework crazy! The whole city area is lite and by 1pm I couldn't see past the first set of houses because of all the smoke! It's such a fun environment and these pictures don't even do the view or fireworks justice.

I hope you've enjoyed getting a glimpse into my holiday. I have some video footage of my time there too, which I am hoping to get up! So stay tuned for that :)

I wish you all the best in 2016! Love you all xx

Until next time,
